What does fall mean to you?
Fall means sweatshirt weather and bonfires with friends. It means mauled wine and apple cider. But most of all for our family, it means preparation for Halloween! September 15th is when we start decorating. We throw an annual themed Halloween party, which continues to grow.
What’s your favorite farmers market? Why?
I love the Minneapolis Farmers Market. They have such a wide variety of fresh produce with a great selection of fresh fruit. They also have tons of beautiful flowers. We love to get a coffee and cinnamon almonds and just browse for what looks good and interesting.
What are some healthy, fall inspired foods you love to prepare?
I love to stuff paddy pan squash with a fresh tomato sauce and bake it until all the flavors meld and the squash is fork tender. Not the healthiest, but my favorite thing in fall to make is homemade apple crisp. The house always smells amazing while it is baking.
What’s been doing well this year in your garden and what are you going to create?
My garden is full of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cucumbers. We have been making lots of panzanella salads – full of fresh tomatoes, day old bread and fresh herbs. We have also been grilling zucchini with olive oil, salt and pepper and it is just delicious!
What do you love to do with friends and family?
With family – pick out pumpkins and have carving contests. With friends – going to the apple orchard and the Alexis Bailey Vinyard. We also love to take day trips to Stillwater and Red Wing and picnic along the river.
How do you like to entertain in the fall?
We love to host dinner parties on the patio, when the days are warm, but the evenings start to get a little cool. We have bistro lights hanging over our patio and candles everywhere, which provides the only light as dusk approaches. We love to surprise our guests with Minnesota comfort food, instead of the expected BBQ. Our favorite thing to make is tater tot hotdish with a bundt cake for dessert.
