What does fall mean to you?
Growing up, my parents really did not like Halloween, but my dad loved to carve pumpkins – the scarier the face the better. My mom toasted the pumpkin seeds, which I then had in my lunch at school.
My kids are grown, but I am hoping we will carve pumpkins at Halloween, since they will both be in Minneapolis. We always took great care choosing the right pumpkin for carving…round for happy faces and oval for the scary versions. You are never too old for pumpkins!
What’s your favorite farmers market? Why?
We love the Mill City Farmers Market: Bolt coffee, Black Cat for breakfast, lots of great produce, meat, honey and of course, mini donuts from Chef Shack. The best mini donuts ever!
What are some healthy, fall inspired foods you love to prepare?
The last of the summer tomatoes for BLT’s and then moving into squash. Yum. Growing up, fall meant the best apples of the season from Washington. My dad was a produce broker and his biggest clients were apple growers in Washington, so that was a treat!
What’s been doing well this year in your garden?
Our tomatoes and herbs have done great. Down to the last of the tomatoes, but the herbs are going strong. I use them in salads and for cooking.
You’ve lived on the West Coast, East Coast and now the Midwest. How does fall compare?
Growing up in southern CA, I never saw the beauty of fall until Mike and I moved to New Hampshire. The first fall there was incredible. I took 100’s of pictures, trying to capture the beauty of the fall colors, but finally figured out that I just had to enjoy it! Being in Minneapolis is the closest thing to the beauty of the Northeast during fall.
