What does Fall mean to you?

I love the smell of the crisp fall air. It is a completely different sensation than summer – from the lower temperature, to the lower humidity, to the distinctive smell.

What’s your favorite farmers market? Why?

I like the Minneapolis Farmers Market. We have our favorite spot to park, where the attendant knows us. We have our favorite vendors selling MN grown produce. One for tomatoes, another has the best corn, canning tomatoes, and delicious Haralson apples. It is fun to see each one, and know that they have been grown with care. There are so many varieties of fruit and vegetables that I have not tried. Someday I might make it through them all.

We are within walking distance to the Mill City Farmers Market. At this market, I find that I seem to be focused on finding breakfast. Sometimes the McDonner Sausage/Egg Muffin sandwich. Sometimes the Bacon Beer Brat from Chef Shack. Always the cinnamon Mini Donuts. Meanwhile my wife is focused on the vegetables and fruits and flowers.

What are some healthy, fall inspired foods you love to prepare?

My wife is an amazing cook and baker. She makes an Eggplant Parmigiano-Reggiano you wouldn’t believe. She makes an amazing Apple Tarte Tatin – where the caramelized apples melt in your mouth with the sweet and intense taste of apple (Haralson).

If you have a garden, what’s been doing well this year and what are you going to create with it?

No room for a balcony garden. Yet we used to have a raised bed garden at our old home by Cedar Lake. We would grow zucchini, butternut squash, heirloom tomatoes, basil, thyme, and more. I do miss that harvest time feeling – pride!

What do you love to do with kids in the fall?

When my nephews were young, we would take them to the apple orchard for hayrides and apple picking. Rafina and I would also go to the farms to pick Strawberries and Raspberries – we made preserves. We even made and canned apple pie filling for Christmas gifts.

…with family?

Thanksgiving with family is always memorable – My Aunt has hosted for years. I look forward to the Turkey with Creamed Onions, Stuffing and desert. Rafina makes the deserts, and often brings Pumpkin Pie, or Pecan Pie and a Chocolate Ganache cake.

…with friends?

Pulling out the canner is a fall ritual. The tradition of homemade, MN grown produce driven gifts has continued. Along with Apple Pie Filling, Strawberry Preserves, and Raspberry Preserves, we have made Tomato Pasta Sauce, Salsa, Carmel Popcorn and Spiced Roasted Nuts.

How do you like to entertain in the fall?

We inevitably have a few “dinner parties” in the fall. Our friends know to come with lots of room in their bellies for food. Rafina whips up amazing meals (I wash dishes and clean up). There is always desert, my favorite. So it might be the Blueberry/Peach cobbler, or the Apple Tarte Tatin, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie, Pineapple Upside down cake, or even a German Chocolate Cake. Whatever it is, it always pleases the palate.
